Siyum exceptions and other posts

Also, more posts including Barbie posts

Here at Modern Relics we explore the big venn diagram of religion, pop culture and the internet. Turns out there’s lots going on there.

This is mostly a post of posts (lots of memes, not a lot of writing) because I have a little backlog and I spent this evening getting my hair done before I see the Barbie movie on Saturday.

99% Invisible Chick Tracts

Thanks to Shanti for alerting me to last week’s episode of 99% Invisible, which is all about Chick Tracts, which I feature here from time to time.

via 99% Invisible

They talk to a guy who was actually converted to Christianity via one of the tracts, and to a bunch of people who collect the tracts despite being opposed to the messages therein.

There’s only a brief mention of Fred Carter in the episode, which is a bit of a shame, but I get that’s not what the episode is about. Carter recently died and was responsible for my favourite Chick Tract artwork, but went mostly uncredited until recently.

Siyum!!!!

I enjoyed this Insta Reel about the Nine Days, a Jewish time of mourning and the siyum loophole. I confess I had to do a bit of Googling to get the joke. This link should contain all the information you need.

Plus, Shoshana from Jewish Memes Only has a slideshow on Threads explaining the Nine Days.

Cute demon bear

Mondo Mascots is an account that posts the very niche Japanese mascot characters (“yuru-chara”). Last time I was in Japan I became rather fond of Arukuma the little green bear with an apple hat from Nagano Prefecture.

Anyway here’s Akkuma the demonic bear from space who lives in Hokkaido.

Elisha and the she-bears wojak

I think the Elisha wojak might be antisemitic but the she-bears story is so funny I appreciate the rest.

Lastly, bibletwt reprise

Last week I wrote about bibletwt, the fandom that’s very into the Bible but not in a religious way. I used the hashtag in a tweet promoting the post and the bibletwt community found it. They were very excited!

User @orelpilled wants to mention that I missed this video that ships Judas/Jesus and he’s very proud of it. I think where the song says “Mary” you have to substitute “Jesus”.

If you ever see anything like this online please send it my way! Especially if it’s not a Christian-themed thing — I want to cover as many religious and religion-adjacent communities as possible.
